As school districts move in to the winter months while still being faced with the COVID-19 public health situation, we ask that you be patient and understanding to the fact that districts are now dealing with a whole new set of challenges for hosting indoor events. I have provided the most current guidelines below outlined by the UIL for districts to host events.
We've recently started our basketball season which will involve both girls and boys playing indoors as well as band concerts, Lovefest Coronation, Academic UIL events, and other youth programs. Each day seems to bring new challenges and we are doing our best to work through each situation. Our number one priority it to keep everyone safe while offering our high quality in-person instructional and extracurricular programs to our students.
The greatest challenge for Lovelady is the fact that our gym offers one of the smallest capacities in our area. I have provided the capacity numbers below for the basketball gyms in our district. Based on the current guidance schools may only allow spectators to attend games, contests, or events within a maximum 50% capacity limitation, provided the appropriate spacing between spectators is maintained according to the protocol. We are working with our technology department to setup livestreaming access for our events as well. As soon as we have this in place we will notify everyone and post the link on our website.
Districts are required to develop a plan for how capacity will be controlled at our events as well as how we will implement the Governor's face covering mandate and meet all of the sanitizing requirements.
For basketball our District Executive Committee, which includes each school district, met and agreed to use a "purchase pass" system and to not accept any passes for the season. The reason for not accepting passes is to allow our parents access to as many seats as possible. We will distribute the purchase passes evenly based on the number of participants involved in each event. In-person meetings are being held to explain this system to our parents. Although, this can be confusing it offers the most flexibility for parents, grandparents, and family members to coordinate and attend games.
We will be using a similar system for our upcoming band concerts. Final decisions for our Lovefest Coronation have not been made at this time. However, we will host these events and our kids will participate even if it's in a modified fashion.
During our regular school day, we are committed to making our environment feel as normal as possible during these trying times. Our teachers and staff members are incredibly dedicated to getting our students back on track academically. Our school district is blessed with the best faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members a school district could ask for.
The deeply rooted traditions and our loyal fans who support our extracurricular activities at Lovelady are valued and very important to us! We look forward to a time when we can all be together at these events without these restrictions in place. Our community is strong and we will get through this together.
2020-2021 UIL COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Guidelines
Updated November 12, 2020
The following guidance related to UIL activities, based on the public health situation as we understand it today, applies to the 2020-2021 school year. This guidance is effective immediately. Changes to the public health situation in the coming months may necessitate changes to this guidance.
Given the varying numbers of COVID-19 cases across different areas of the state, and the vast geographic area in the state of Texas, UIL is presenting modifications for the 2020-21 school year that reflect the situation at this time. UIL will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and other federal guidance to determine any potential modifications that may become necessary. Schools should be prepared for the possibility of interruptions in contest schedules. District Executive Committees should work and plan to accommodate, as best possible, for these interruptions.
These guidelines are in addition to guidance issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and intended to be implemented along with TEA guidance, which applies to academic and extracurricular non-UIL activities. Schools must develop a plan for mitigating risk of COVID-19 spread during UIL activities. Schools should take their local context into account and follow all state requirements when considering UIL activities.
It is recommended that each school identify a staff member or group of staff members to serve as compliance officer(s) to oversee effective use of these protocols. Schools must follow all requirements of state authorities in addition to the requirements below.
Face Coverings- Executive Order GA-29
Executive Order GA-29, regarding face coverings, applies to all UIL activities effective July 3, 2020. This includes the 2020-2021 school year. As the public health situation changes, and/or if subsequent Executive Orders are issued by Governor Greg Abbott, these guidelines may be further modified.
Spectators, Audiences, Fans and Media
Schools may allow spectators to attend games, contests, or events within a maximum 50% capacity limitation, provided that appropriate spacing between spectators is maintained according to the protocol.
